Hello guys, let’s talk about our VICES, shall we? And
this is strictly between us by the way.
I am asking here that we have a man-to-man chat on
some of our bad behaviours. Which of
them is worse?
The thought of figuring this out has nudged me persistently for
a while now. Many of us have probably
heard women, when sharing their experiences, console themselves with words such
as “No man is perfect. Just accept and endure the failings in your own partner;
others are contending with far worse misbehaviours in their relationships”.
Is this really true? Are there no men out
there without serious personal ‘issues’?
Let me attempt a quick clarification here. A man having
a bad temper, being physically or verbally abusive, being lazy, unambitious and
unsupportive, negligent of his responsibilities to the home or relationship, having
a wasteful and extravagant lifestyle, etc these are among many ugly character
traits that can drive a female partner to the edge and wish she had better lot
in life. Yet, reprehensible as these
individual traits are, they are not the focus of my discussion here.
Rather, to put it starkly, I am referring to
the immoralities and depravities we men indulge in for the temporary pleasures
they offer us but which, often on the long run, are the impediments to our true
progress and fulfillment in career, family life and personal health.
For this discussion, while I welcome contributions
that would widen my list below, I would like to zero on the following vices in
no particular order:
1.
Alcohol consumption
2.
Pornography
3.
Gambling
4.
Cigarette Smoking
5.
Drug Addiction
6.
Sex addiction and Infidelity
I really want us to look at my list in the context of extremes.
In this wise, we shall see alcohol consumption, pornography, gambling and the
rest of my list in the form of addiction, a compulsory, emotionally- engaging
act that has kept a man hooked down in spite of several attempts to shake
himself free!
I must admit, by the way, that my perception of what a
vice is may have been influenced somewhat by my religious leaning. Being a
Christian, there is little doubt that my opinion is at best subjective on whatever
I view as morally acceptable and what is not. In any case, I would imagine that there
shouldn’t be any difficulty in getting a consensus on what is a good or bad behaviour,
whether you are religious or not. Whoever is uncontrollably enslaved to any of the
vices on my list is most probably angry at himself and is daily wishing for a
miracle to be delivered of it!
Of all the above, which do you consider worse? Here’s
an opportunity to be brutally frank and sincere among ourselves, even as we
share our personal experiences or observations.
Now let’s get started!
